Our Programs

WeCare International Ministries Inc. provides a vital support system for refugees, immigrants, and asylum seekers in Canada, focusing on Women and Children, or family, offering emergency shelter, food, and care to those in urgent need. Their commitment to offering a safe space for women, children, and families ensures that these individuals, often in vulnerable positions, have a secure environment to rest and start rebuilding their lives.

The services provided through  Shelter Program are comprehensive, including:

  • Counseling and Settlement Support: Helping individuals navigate the refugee determination and landing process.
  • Housing Assistance: Ensuring that individuals and families find transitional accommodation.
  • Referrals: Connecting clients with resources like ESL programs, medical services, and legal assistance.
  • Trauma-informed care: Support for those with higher needs, with referrals to longer-term housing options.
  • Follow-up Support: Helping clients even after they leave the shelter to ensure they continue to thrive.

For those seeking to access these services, the recommendation to call ahead helps streamline the process, especially given the waiting list. The organization’s ability to prioritize based on need means those in most urgent situations are assisted first.

This project will make a significant impact, in my view as long as we receive enough funding, it will assist  over 1 million, young people in the first phase! The fact that it specifically focuses on girls and gender-diverse youth is crucial, as they often face unique challenges related to self-esteem and body image.

It is a great idea to emphasize building self-esteem as a gradual process, similar to how leaders are developed. It’s not just about providing resources but also giving youth the skills to continue growing and nurturing their confidence.

Looking ahead to the second phase, with the goal of reaching two million young people, it’ll be exciting to see how the project expands its impact. Are there any new strategies or areas of focus in this next phase, or is it building on the successes of the first one? Time will tell we launch this as a pilot project.

Leaders are built one step at a time, and it’s a task that requires harnessing the power within. Two key components of this power are confidence and self-esteem.  Together, we can support youth in countering negative self-images so that they can step into their full potential every day and well into the future.

5 Key Strategies to End Child Marriage

1. Challenge Gender Norms Addressing the traditions and patriarchal systems that perpetuate gender inequality is essential. Many girls grow up believing their value lies solely in their virginity or reproductive role. Child marriage, tied to harmful practices like female genital mutilation (FGM), restricts girls’ rights and choices. Ending child marriage requires a collective effort—starting within households and extending to communities—to challenge the belief that girls are inferior to boys. Providing education on the harmful impacts of child marriage can empower families and community leaders to reject this discriminatory practice.2. Ensure Access to Quality Education for Girls Keeping girls in school is one of the most effective ways to prevent child marriage. For every year a girl stays in secondary school, her likelihood of marrying as a child decreases by six percentage points. Education not only reduces child marriage but creates generational benefits. Educated girls are more likely to secure independence and skills to support themselves and their families, breaking the cycle of early marriage.3. Improve Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health Services Child marriage often denies girls control over decisions about their bodies, including the right to use contraceptives or delay childbirth. Early pregnancies, frequently linked to child marriage, have long-term health impacts. Providing accurate information on sexual and reproductive health, along with education, helps delay marriage and improves overall well-being for adolescent girls.4. Support Development Programs for Adolescent Girls When girls are provided with safe spaces to learn and network, they gain the confidence and tools to advocate for themselves. Decreasing isolation and promoting skill-building through community programs empowers girls to make informed life choices. Investing in targeted programs and services ensures girls at risk of or already in child marriages can access the help they need.5. Strengthen Legal Protections for Girls Governments must enforce laws that prohibit child marriage and align with international human rights standards. Policies should also promote education, economic opportunities, and social support for both married and unmarried girls, creating pathways to a brighter future.

The Challenges Facing Women and Children, Youth Care Providers

Child and youth care providers face numerous challenges, especially as newcomers navigating a broken system. Delivering high-quality care while maintaining financial stability proves incredibly difficult. High-quality child care is essential for ensuring children’s safety, health, and early learning. However, the high costs of care often leave providers struggling to sustain their businesses and make services affordably for many working families.

Operating on razor-thin budgets, child care providers often lack the resources to address critical needs such as facility repairs, upgrades, renovations, and maintenance—essential for creating safe and supportive environments for children.

Our partners at WeCare International Foundation Trust face similar challenges, including the urgent need to construct a two-story building to expand their capacity and purchase at least three Land Cruisers to access remote rural areas where off-road vehicles are necessary. Reaching these underserved communities, where transportation is scarce, is a vital part of their mission to provide care and support.

Unfortunately, funding remains a significant barrier. While some funders offer programs to assist care providers, the majority of charities and nonprofits have limited access to sustainable financial solutions. For many, the only available options—such as loans—pose additional risks. Loans often require collateral that nonprofits do not possess, and the repayment fees and interest can further strain already limited resources. As a nonprofit organization, seeking loans is not a viable solution for us.

We appeal to funders, organizations, and individuals willing to support these essential efforts. Together, we can overcome these challenges and ensure that children and youth receive the care they need.
